An interesting review from Eric Karsenti, published in Nature (2008).
It gives an original insight on the importance of self-organisation in shape determination. Apparently, the philosopher Kant was the first to define a 'self-organised' process.
"Through pure reasoning, he defined life as the emergence of functions by self-organisation".
"This led him to question the validity of using the causality principle of classical physics to explain life, and that a new kind of science is required to study how purpose and means are intricately connected".
This review insists on the necessary loop between organization and function. However, the emergence of function can/should be studied separately. Indeed "the goal of the science of self-organization is to identify the principles and mechanisms by which an ensemble of agents in interaction evolves towards a particular dynamical temporal or spatial pattern". Independently from the function this system may achieve.
And it is precisely at this point where self-organisation principles in physics start to be highly inspiring !
Open question:
Is it necessary to uncouple (dynamical) interactions that form the biological shape and the emergent function to understand a living entity ?
