Denis Guedj

Friday, May 7, 2010

Almost two years ago, when we began to organise the first interdisciplinary PhD symposium in Paris, we decided to open this event with a public talk.

It was the opportunity to gather scientists and non-scientists for a discussion about the topic of the symposium: numbers in life sciences. It quickly became obvious that Denis Guedj was the perfect speaker for such an occasion. We have had the pleasure to meet him several times in order to discuss the spirit we aimed to have during the PhD symposium, and he kindly accepted our invitation.

On Sunday, December the 6th, everyone present at the Ecole Normale Supérieure enjoyed a 2-hour talk during which Denis Guedj drew links between the ways mathematical theorems are discovered, how societies works and how democracy could be strengthen. As always, he captivated his audience and triggered interesting exchanges between participants. When he passed away a few days ago, we sadly realized that such an evening won't be possible anymore. For the future, we therefore hope to keep with us a part of its enthuiasm for conveying scientific ideas to broad public.
